About the Author

David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator with Bill Mollison of the permaculture concept following the publication of Permaculture One in 1978. Since then he has written several more books, developed three properties using permaculture principles, conducted workshops and courses in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Japan. Within the growing and international permaculture movement, David is respected for his commitment to presenting permaculture ideas through practical projects and teaching by personal example, that a sustainable lifestyle is a realistic, attractive and powerful alternative to dependent consumerism. As well as constant involvement in the practical side of permaculture, David is passionate about the philosophical and conceptual foundations for sustainability, which he explored in Future Scenarios: How Communities Can Adapt to Peak Oil and Climate Change (2009), and Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability (2003). With an increasingly high profile as a public speaker, David Holmgren provides leadership with his refreshing and unorthodox approach to the environmental issues of our time. David lives with his partner Su Dennett and their son Oliver at "Melliodora", a one-hectare permaculture demonstration site at Hepburn Springs, Central Victoria, Australia. I actually bought this for a class. The project required a book of our choosing. The following is my response to the project questions. Why did you choose this book? I initially chose this book because I have had an interest in “sustainability” for a few years now. Over the summer of 2014, my wife’s family and I took a roadtrip to southern Florida to visit my brother-in-law, who was, at the time, an intern at a sustainability education center for missionaries, called H.E.A.R.T. villiage. There I first learned of the permaculture concept, and became enamored by it. In preparation for this project, I found a list of “essential” books on the topic, and chose this one because of the reviews. Why is this an important topic? As any environmental scientist will tell you, it is the people who work directly with the land who are in a unique place to bring about tremendous environmental change. Their intimate knowledge of how plants and animals interact with one another is the key to ecosystem restoration and stability. “For any human culture to be considered sustainable it must have the capacity (proven only with historical hindsight) to reproduce itself down the generations while providing human material needs without cataclysmic and long-term breakdown. If it is energetically impossible for high energy society (such as ours) to be anything more than a pulse in the long run of human history, then it cannot, by definition, be sustainable, no matter how much we shuffle the technological deckchairs.” Today, it is almost common knowledge that we are in need of global structural and economic reforms. Climate change, resource depletion, peak oil, desertification, etc. Modern civilization is a global one, and so these challenges are faced by everyone. We need systems and models that anyone can utilize to help our species mitigate and adapt to these problems.Permaculture is one such system, and a very promising one at that. Permaculture: (Permanent Culture) - The use of systems thinking and design principles that provide the organizing framework for implementing consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature - a creative design response to a world of declining energy and resource availability - yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs, simultaneously restoring damaged & destroyed landscapes. Permaculture is a system with immediate gains (by way of production and restoration) and does not require environmentally taxing inputs. Nor does this practice require government intervention (something which I’m sure we all desire a bit less of.) Permaculture comes pre-packaged with straightforward principles and pathways that can aid our civilization in its much needed energy descent, can help restore damaged and destroyed landscapes, can provide bountifully to human material (and even psychological?) needs, and most importantly: can help us build a more sustainable and prosperous world. The Book: Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability by David Holmgren.C. 2002 - Sustainable Design - Environmental EthicsWhat was the author’s purpose in writing this book? “To explain permaculture to a wider audience that may not be attracted by the organic gardening label. It is especially aimed at activists, designers, teachers, researchers, students, and others grappling with the vexed issues of sustainability within a wide range of fields.”Did the author make a logical argument? Since this is mostly a work of philosophy, thankfully, Holmgren sets up the book’s argument in the introduction. “Like all ideas, permaculture is founded on some fundamental assumptions that are critical to both understanding and evaluating it:”---The environmental crisis is real and of a magnitude that will certainly transform modern global industrial society beyond recognition. In the process, the well-being and even survival of the world’s expanding population is directly threatened.---The ongoing and future impacts of global industrial society and human numbers on the world’s wondrous biodiversity are assumed to be far greater than the massive changes of the last few hundred years.---Humans, although unusual within the natural world, are subject to the same scientific (energy) laws that govern the material universe, including the evolution of life.---The tapping of fossil fuels during the industrial era was seen as the primary cause of the spectacular explosion in human numbers, technology, and every other novel feature of modern society.---Despite the inevitably unique nature of future realities, the inevitable depletion of fossil fuels within a few generations will see a return to the general patterns observable in nature and pre-industrial societies dependent on renewable energy and resources. Holmgren then goes on to explain how Permaculture differs from organic gardening or technological responses to these problems. Permaculture:Gives priority to using existing wealth to rebuilding natural capital, especially trees and forests, as a proven storage of wealth to sustain humanity into a future with less fossil fuel.---Emphasises bottom-up “redesign” processes, starting with the individual and household as the drivers for change at the market, community and cultural level.---More fundamentally, was predicated on the likelihood of some degree of collapses and breakdown in technology, economics and even society, which is not envisaged or designed for by the “green tech” optimists but is a current reality for many people around the world.---Sees pre-industrial sustainable societies as providing models that reflect the more general system design principles observable in nature, and relevant to post-industrial systems. Arguably, one of the most important things Holmgren argues about the permaculture concept, is that it is predicated on the natural flows of universal energy laws - either humanity will naturally begin to adapt in this way (and so formulaic principles and pathways can help us mitigate more effectively), or perhaps they will bridge the energy gap (fusion?)...however, new technology does not come prepackaged with a “wisdom chip,” so organizing societies in sustainable ways is the most responsible and sensible thing we can do. Given the tenacity with which Holmgren defends these principles and pathways, with the wealth of 25 years of personal observation and experimentation and a myriad of scientific wisdom, I say that yes, his arguments are quite solid.Do you feel the items were logically based and true? Yes. Example: refer to IPCC report AR5Did the author keep you interested? I have been trained to study Philosophy, so this is my jam. However, I might warn those I would recommend this book to about its intellectual density.Share your favorite part of the book:---The Permaculture Flower (“The key domains that require transformation to create a sustainable culture.”)---The Twelve Permaculture Principles (“Generalized principles can be derived from the study of both the natural world and pre-industrial societies.”)---How he repeatedly makes the point that “The process of providing for people’s needs within ecological limits and in more sustainable ways requires a cultural revolution.”---How he explains that “business as usual” tactics will not solve the crises we are facing. What did you like most about the book? How carefully and logically it was written. How well mapped out its principles are. What did you like least? This is not a typical gardening book, but more of a philosophical treatise on the underpinnings of the permaculture concept. Having a background in philosophy and a craving for deep ecological understanding, I really enjoyed it. However, it is hard to recommend to anyone without those requisites. It is not, in any sense, light reading. The issues Holmgren raises could be very disturbing to some. It attempts to make a perennial statement of ethics, so for anyone who has studied moral philosophy, it might seem a bit misanthropic for those not already convinced by its precepts. The biggest problem with the book is its unashamedly anarchistic view of civilization, and so its callous attitude toward government. This will be an immediate turnoff to some, and leaves gaping holes where large scale policy recommendations might have been beneficial. (Though this was his point. Radical change is individual change.)What will be your lasting impression of the subject? This book was definitely highly influential to me. It helped me mentally structure my interest in sustainability, and helped me develop specific methods of systems thinking that I had before only conceptualized. I will be using this book throughout my academic career.Did you learn something new from the book? One of the most important concepts I learned from this book was the relationship between natural laws and human action. Specifically, Holmgren’s recognition of the 4th energy law of maximum power efficiency as a sociogeobiophysical design principle, and the application of this law to humane terra formations. Demonstrations of these kinds of relationships introduced “systems thinking,” and ultimately has lead me to pursue the field of systems ecology.Would you recommend this book? How would you rate it? Yes. However, as I’ve said, I’d warn the reader of its philosophical density. On a scale of ten, I’d give it a rating of 8.5.

Holmgren turns a good idea into a religion. Sustainable agriculture is too important for a closed shop policy. The book shows the ideas but it is more of a cult than a practical guide to sustainable agriculture. I recommend other books to start with like the ones from Shepard or Savory or Toensmeier. If you want a new religion go for Holmgren. If you want advice for practical sustainable agriculture go somewhere else.

I wanted to love this book but I felt it was so hard to read. Very creative and deep thinking but unless you have a pretty good understanding of permaculture this book might just fly by your head. I had a hard time understanding some examples when it was describing David's native Australian countryside. Also it felt like it was a jumble of notes compiled together. Sort of reminded me of Bruce Lee's Tao of JKD. They try and categorize each section into the Permaculture principles but there is so much jumping around and reconnect I lose sight on what that section is focusing on.Lots of run on sentences that were really wordy. I had to read over many things two to three times to try to wrap my head around things. You really need to be focused to take in the information in this book. It does show how permaculture is a diverse web of interactions both on an ecological and principle level. But if you studied permaculture you'd know that already. If you're serious about permaculture get it and dive in. You'll find nuggets of information. But be warned you might get frustrated with his writing style.

A masterpiece of rigor and moral clarity. Holmgren has taken the next important step in the global Permaculture movement started by the brilliant and charismatic Bill Mollison, in that he has crystallized Mollison's insights into a mandala of twelve key principles. These principles go well beyond the detailed suggestions for regenerative gardening techniques that comprise most Permaculture literature--they are generalized so as to be universally applicable, yet clear and precise in their explanations. This theoretically dense book should be read slowly and deliberately in a group--a book club, for example, so that these principles can be thoroughly grasped and discussed. If Bill Mollison's Permaculture Design Manual is the practical permaculture "bible," this book is its theoretical complement.

I read this book and could see how this thinking about use and re-use, planning and observing will help not just my garden but my life. Really useful examples of each principle and in depth discussion of what they mean, how they can be applied in lots of cases.

Book arrived in good condition, good info.

condition of the book was excellent, however David Holmgren spends almost the entire time convincing the reader that he is knowledgable and doesn not provide any information on sustainable permaculture

This is a good book for those who are new to permaculture.I think there are better ones out there, but this covers the basics.

Review

“Yarm’s affectionate, gossipy, detailed look at the highs and lows of the contemporary Seattle music scene is one of the most essential rock books of recent years.”—Kirkus Review, *Starred Review* “Hardcore fans of grunge will treasure this.”—Publishers Weekly “Yarm, a former editor of Blender, interviewed more than 250 musicians, scenesters, and record business types to deliver a personal, comprehensive history of grunge music…Highly recommended.”—Library Journal"Mark Yarm has assembled the gospels of Grunge music. Here is a warts-and-elbows refresher course for those of us who still find our memories of the era a little hazy."─Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club"A very noble record of the grunge scene—and an excellent addition to the growing library of oral history music books."—Legs McNeil, coauthor of Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk and the forthcoming Resident Punk "Great oral histories are rare.  Hewing a narrative from all those chaotic and often conflicting memories with testimony alone and no guide-prose or stage direction is difficult.  Making that somehow intimate and epic is nearly impossible.   When a writer pulls it off, as Mark has with Everybody Loves Our Town, it's really a gift: the subject or scene finally gets its definitive record and the reader gains what feels like a room full of brand new friends.  One of the best rock reads in a very long time."─Marc Spitz (co-author We Got The Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of LA Punk, music blogger VanityFair.com)."In Everybody Loves Our Town, Mark Yarm collects and dispenses remarkable insights about a genre no one even wants to claim as their own. As a child of grunge – who spent a humiliating chunk of the 1990s in an Alice in Chains t-shirt – I loved this book; it clarified so many things about a sound and a time I thought I already knew."─Amanda Petrusich, author of It Still Moves: Lost Songs, Lost Highways, and the Search for the Next American Music"A deeply funny story, as well as a deeply sad story--the glorious Nineties moment when a bunch of punk rock bands from Seattle accidentally blew up into the world’s biggest noise. Mark Yarm gives the definitive chronicle of how it all happened, and how it ended too soon. But the book also makes you appreciate how weird it is that this moment happened at all."─Rob Sheffield, author of Love Is A Mix Tape and Talking To Girls About Duran Duran"A definitive, irreplaceable chronicle of one of rock-n-roll's greatest eras. It should sit tall on any rock lover's bookshelf."─Neal Pollack, author of Never Mind The Pollacks“In an attempt to trace the real roots of grunge, journalist Mark Yarm compiled an exhaustive oral history from the people who lived it.  In his book Everybody Loves Our Town, there are interviews with everyone from the early adopters to those that were late to the party, but nevertheless helped extend [grunge's] shadow of influence by turning it into a look for the world to emulate.” —The Fader“This massively readable tome gathers recollections from every grunge band you’ve ever heard of (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Melvins) and some you haven’t (we hardly knew ye, Skin Yard)…The genre’s first truly comprehensive insider history…It’s gossipy…and fascinating, with so much backstabbing and death it’s like Shakespeare, if Shakespeare had written about heroin addicts with bad hair.”—Revolver (4 out of 4 stars)“An impressive display of reportorial industriousness… It’s the feel-bad rock book of the fall.”—Bloomberg Businessweek“Oral history is an art in itself. It’s why Everybody Loves Our Town will endure as a classic of monumental scale.”—Paste Magazine. “For hardcore fans or people just curious about what the fuss was all about, Mark Yarm’s excellent new book –Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge” is well worth the read. Yarm has done an admirable job of assembling an engaging, funny and ultimately sad narrative by letting the people who helped create the Jet City sound talk about what happened in their own words.—Seattle Post-Intelligencer“Yarm’s account captures the essential tension that made the era so compelling.”—Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune "We finished all five hundred and forty-two pages of this book in two days, abandoning all responsibility (this, friends, is why we do not have children; had there been any children about us, we would have locked these unfortunate creatures in the bathroom, so as to not bedistracted) and staying up until two in the morning, reading whole chunks of it out loud to poor long-suffering Support Team."--TheRejectionist.comMark Yarm's superb book, Everybody Loves Our Town: A History of Grunge details the dramatic rise of the grunge movement and all of its players, including Cobain, Love and Vedder, told through the voices of the people that lived through it.--Hollywood Reporter“I came away from this book with a big smile on my face. Lots of it is like a gray day in western Washington; you’ve been kicked out of yet another band, and your girlfriend is spending far too much time with the drummer from the Melvins or the Screaming Trees. In the end, though, “Everybody Loves Our Town" made me want to be young, stupid and lucky again. Mainly, it made me want to be young.”--The Washington Post“Everybody Loves Our Town should inspire new conversations about the unique culture and people that made grunge so unusual and unforgettable to so many fans. The book is timely, as 2011 marks the 20-year anniversary of  Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and Pearl Jam’s multi-platinum debut album, “Ten.” Everybody Loves Our Town is as good an excuse as any to put on an Alice in Chains CD and curl up with a good book about some great old friends with whom we haven’t spent much time in a while.”--The Washington Independent Review of Books “Everybody Loves Our Town is authoritatively researched and compiled, often very funny and always just a little bit sad.”—Buffalo News"Like a very extended and entertaining all-night bulls--- session among everyone who mattered during the late-'80s/early-'90s music scene."--Seattle Weekly"The scope is encyclopaedic and the closeness to the subject unparalleled."--Record Collector"A wild ride that is in turns uplifting and tragic." --Your FleshNamed one of the top music books of 2011 by UK Telegraph"Riveting, gossipy, and impossible to put down until the last quote has been read." --New York magazine's Vulture blog“This exhaustive oral history features unknowns, cult figures, supporting players and stars; each gets the time he or she deserves as Yarm pieces together the arc of a scene that built itself from scratch, blossomed beyond most people's dreams, and then crashed. Yes, there are plenty of Kurt Cobain stories. But there's much more, too — indelible characters, weird scenes, creative chaos, laughs and tragedy and lots of cheap beer.”—NPR.org "Gen-X music geeks: Here’s your holy grail." --Tulsa World"The best book on music I've read this year." --Omaha World-Herald“This volume could have been a huge, snarky compendium of gossip and score settling from the inhabitants of a claustrophobically insular local music scene. And it is, but in the best possible way—and it’s also much, much more…. Yarm has culled the story of grunge from the people who created it, and their testimony is remarkable for its eloquence and its passion and its fairness and its anger.” —Lev Grossman, Time (named one of the magazine's Top 10 nonfiction books of 2011) “A Herculean work of interviewing and editing which gives everyone a voice, from the biggest stars to the lowliest foot soldiers… . Though the Seattle scene’s stew of folly, feuding, rampant drug addiction and a startling number of fatalities might have made for a voyeuristic tale, Yarm leaves the reader full of empathy for young men and women swept up in a cultural moment they couldn’t control.” —The Guardian (named a best music book of the year)  “Exhilarating … Mark Yarm’s brilliant and exhaustive oral history of grunge is full of … vivid observations. Some 250 interviews with those intimately associated with the most unlikely musical sensation of all time piece together a story that is hilarious and tragic and utterly gripping.” —Sunday Times of London  A Gawker.com Best Thing We Read All Year selection “[A] lively, funny, melancholy and exhaustive oral history … For all its eventual compromise and dissolution, Seattle was briefly an exhilarating pop cultural moment to rank with the greats. Yarm’s labour of love has well and truly done it justice.” —Time Out London  “If you loved the ’90s and you haven’t read this book, you MUST. I’m absolutely obsessed with Mark Yarm’s masterpiece right now.” —USAToday.com’s Pop Candy column "Full of so many entertaining stories and thrilling anecdotes that we have read it cover-to-cover TWICE. You should do the same!" —VH1.com “The definitive oral history of the Seattle music scene, period.” —Alternative Press

Loved it. LOVED it. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. This book just blew me away. Easily the best book on music I've ever read, and probably the best book I've read on anything in several years.Having grown up in Seattle, I've been a fan of the Seattle bands since the early 90s. Up until very recently I actually segregated my "Seattle" bands from all the others in my CD collection. I found out just how little I actually knew about them all by reading this book. First off, the drugs, wow. I knew there were a lot of drugs being used, but holy cow I didn't have any clue as to how bad it was. It's front and center here because it took such a horrific toll on the musicians and those around them, from Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley to Stephanie Sargent and Mike Starr. But the one that really seemed to kick the entire community in the gut was Andrew Wood. To hear about what these people meant to the people who knew them, in their own words, it just takes you way beyond the music, which is often secondary in this history.Grunge seemed to have exploded onto the airwaves when Nirvana released Nevermind, but in the long arc of its rise and fall that was actually nearer the end than the beginning. Yarm tracked down virtually anyone and everyone who planted the seeds with the punk bands from throughout western Washington, like the U-Men and Melvins. While the book has plenty of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, there is no shortage of other bands, including the Screaming Trees, Candlebox, the Gits, 7 Year Bitch, Mudhoney, and Green River. And don't forget Cat Butt. (How could anyone, with a name like that?) He also gives a lot of space to the guys at Sub Pop records, who were instrumental in helping a lot of these bands find an audience. The book is entirely told by the people who were there when it all happened, at least a couple hundred in all. Fortunately, Yarm included a handy alphabetical reference list in the back, which I was constantly flipping to to remember just who someone was and what their role in the music community was. It's alternately sad (lots of death), funny, and gossipy, almost to the point of catty, particularly whenever Courtney Love is involved. She really came across to me as an utterly psychotic bitch. So much so that I feel bad for liking her music. There weren't many others who had much nice to say about her. No surprise there. What did surprise me was how much everyone else hated Candlebox, a band I've always liked. I never realized what outcasts they were on the local music scene.I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my niece a couple years ago. At the time I thought, "I should read this before I send it to her." I didn't, but I finally got my own copy and am glad I did. Fantastic.

At first I was skeptical of the writing style (just for the first chapter or two), but quickly began to love it as the story flows seamlessly being told from all sides including bands, labels, "scenesters", and more... I could not put it down. Interesting to know that Seattle was a "quiet" town not known for live music until this "revolution" of music and tech occurred. Plus it is great to learn about many of the bands who started this (before Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc) but never received the recognition/accolades for it.

This is my favorite book EVER! I am a big, big fan of Seattle and it's notorious grunge scene. This book is an oral history, meaning, it is a compilation of interviews from key players from the scene. Some names you might know, some you might not. But their story plays a vital role in the development of music and influences for the genre. I didn't think I would enjoy the "oral history," but is so well done, you almost feel like you are reading someone's diary. It is the personal thoughts and stories straight from the people who lived it! And it is also well organized by chapter, so it all makes sense and flows nicely. If you like Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Mudhoney--this is the book for you! It also touches on all the other bands that never made it big and how all of their stories put together is what made the genre thrive in the first place! It's brilliant and kudos to Mark Yarm for putting it all together!

Anything you've ever needed to know about any and every grunge band that mattered. Full of amazing stories (Kat Bjelland may or may not have had a crush on Layne Staley? Madonna may or may not have tried to seduce the singer for Candlebox?) and some unbelievable pictures. Of course, the ending is not the happiest and everyone knows how deep the demons plaguing the grunge scene ran, but this is a story of perseverance, love, and the joy of writing music and playing it with your friends to the people who matter most.

This book gives the reader an in depth look at what it was like to be part of the ‘grunge’ movement in the early to mid 90s as told by many of the major players. It was a good read and as long as this book was, I still didn’t want it to end. Best music movement since the 60s in my opinion, and the unique perspective offered as direct quotes from the musicians and various business types, made you feel like you were a part of it.

One of the most complete, intelligent, insightful books on the subject - if not the best of all. It covers the history of a musical maelstrom and of the bands that were at the epicenter of that historical cultural moment The music, the business, the brilliance, the public and private hells: All in the very words of those who lived through it.If you want to read only one book on what most defined the culture of the 90s, read this. It will become a go-to for information as well.

This IS an art book, and whether or not you appreciated the game is irrelevant. This art book is gorgeous and the colors are amazing. It possesses what I EXPECT from an art book: concept art. Not as much as I'd like, as I like to see the entire development of a character, but it does show the development. For instance, the character concept for Cora in the book is dramatically different than what made it into the final game.Where this book also shines is the over-all development for the Kett is really shown well here. A few pages are totally dedicated to the development of Kett and Angara. It possesses concept art for armor as well. Not much, but it does explain the artists' thinking when planning out the armor. This brings me to another major thing I want in every art book: artist commentary. This book has it, and that's of vital importance to me, personally. If you collect art books or just like to see the development process, this book is a must-have.

I should have g otten into the art work part a long time ago. Great book, very detailed and will be sending it as a gift to my siblings who are artists.

Gorgeous. Love Mass Effect and really enjoying the new installment. Feels like home. The artwork and detail in this book is very worth it for any collector!

I absolutely love the art inside the book. I love the cover (front and back) as well. I enjoyed looking through the concept art seeing how certain characters and alien races developed. The commentary was also insightful. However, I'm not sure what happened during the shipping process. I bought new, and when it arrived, in a box, the plastic seal was broken and several pages have been bent and even slightly ripped in a small part of the back of the book. It's a minor issue and has nothing to do with the contents of the book.

This is a grate book for anyone looking to add syfi art to there collection. That being said It may have limited references for those who don't understand how to paint digitally granted to the average costumer Its a grand collection of environmental art. But for people who like the weapons, tools and very ruff sketch work that goes into making these wonders is only a small part of the book. Most of the work is full painted work not line work or step by step making of pics with few exceptions.what you do get is multiple pages of fully painted landscapes, outfits and even small notes from the developers giving you nuggets of incite into the works on page from waterfalls to icecaps to ash covered sky's atop rivers of lava this book will Inspire anyone with a eye for art.The book itself is a hard cover with glossed pages and is ruffly as thick as a Nintendo 3ds xl so your money is not going to waste if you chose to pick up a copy. Just be warned if you were looking for drawing references this might not have everything your hopping for.

The game is great but I felt like there were times when it was stuffed full of detail that I missed, so I'm thrilled to have this book!! Filled with lots of great concept art, character designs, and developer commentary. Great quality printing and binding too. As an artist it excites me to see people's hard work, and as a bonus, I have a fabulous source for future inspiration.

-Very good reference for aspiring/hobbyist artists/video game artists or character designers, especially if weak in the sci-fi department.-Won't make you a Bungie artist. (Bungie games are bootyful.)

Seeing the evolution of the concept art is worth the price, however as per my headline there are few areas that do not have enough content. With all of the various firearms new and old, it is surprising that there is only one page (two if you count melee weapons) of weapons. For the book's faults, I would still suggest this to fans of Mass Effect and of sci-fi art at large.

I'm going to come out with a bold statement - I believe this is the closest I have come to achieving the management of my binge eating disorder. I've done all kinds of counselling/therapy, read just about every book there is, meds with nasty side effects, and nothing..nothing.. comes close to this. Anyone who has endured a true binge eating disorder will know the misery of this horrible affliction. The hack does something...I don't know what...but it re-sets my hungry brain, maybe it signals that I'm in a fed state, or satiety hormones or maybe I feel full and satisfied without that bloated yukky feeling that triggers BED. Who knows, all I know is it works for me. I start each week with a 3 day hack and then am able to spend the rest of the week eating like a normal human should, no thoughts of binging and craving only healthy meat and veggies. It is different to every mono diet hack out there. Who would have thought POTATOES would have this effect; it's crazy beyond belief.Thank you so much Tim; I'm so grateful to you, you have no idea how much. Please anyone out there with any binge eating issues maybe consider this hack. It goes well beyond the weight loss; in fact for me the weight loss is icing on the cake (or butter on the potato) it's the regulation of brain/head/hedonistic hunger that is it's true worth. Please, if you suffer from BED or have a loved one battling it, perhaps give this a try, nothing to lose.

This was (for me) the instant cure to a life-long battle with binge eating disorder. I was just trying it to see if I could lose some weight. I bought this and three other Kindle books at the same time and started here.I bought 3 bags of organic potatoes, five lbs. each. I figured I was going to need the "max" allowable. I baked two of the bags and boiled the third. Each of the three days I had more potatoes "left over" than the previous day. I ended up going four days, as I had fallen that far behind in my potato eating. This is pretty much where I settled. Three bags goes four days. The day after my first hack, I had gone four days on plain potatoes. I went "old school" and took the most restrictive variation of the program. (Also where I settled.) No salt, pepper, lemon juice...just 100% plain potato. So I was really looking forward to breakfast the next day with the family at their favorite greasy taco joint. I ordered three avocado tacos and a pancake. I was a little over full. Later that same day we had lunch at a Greek place and I ordered the falafel wrap and a salad. I ate about half of it and asked for a box. My wife remarked "That thing you are doing must be working!" She was right of course, I never ask for a box, unless I am greedily taking somebody else's leftovers, because I never have anything left over. I used to eat the garnish, and even the cloth napkin was looking nervous. My wife's observation had me looking at how I ate for the next three days with a critical eye. I was eating to "satisfied" and finding satisfied well before "painfully gorged" which was something I had never experienced in my life. A switch had been flipped.I don't know how it works, but I have a theory. People like me are junkies with food because we don't get the "reward" signal as fast as normal people. Our brains haven't told us we are done yet. In fact, they are telling us we MUST keep going. Whatever scoreboard keeps track of "satisfaction points" isn't counting everything, or counts it slowly.Plain potatoes are bland. They serve the purpose, but the reward isn't there at all. Without those points racking up in the brain, you just stop. And the next time you stop a little sooner. Then you settle at the right place. That scoreboard is getting recalibrated! For me that took the initial four days of my first hack cycle. Now when I went back to regular eating, the reward-feedback-satisfaction loop had been lowered. I stopped getting the "you must keep going" impulse much sooner than I normally would. I was NOT at a normal level. I was still putting away more calories than a healthy human being, but that first cycle dropped my impulse to eat significantly enough that other people were noticing. After four cycles of four days each, I was eating like a normal human being instead of a rescue dog.Now I know Tim has variations. I know Tim allows salt. But the focus of Tim's book is weight loss. It is my firm belief that doing the restrictive version of this program, lowering and simplifying the taste as much as possible, is what you want to do if your goal is recovering from food addiction. I also got much better results when I limited the richness of the foods I ate on my non-hack days. You will be surprised how great some steamed broccoli tastes after four days of plain boiled potatoes. And that great taste you are now registering from healthy food starts racking up the points in that scoreboard keeping track of how close to "satisfied" you are.

I went from 223.5 to 165 in 9 months. I used the potatoes and added low fat, no salt added vegetables. At 5'9" my starting weight was obese, then went to overweight recently I am at top of normal weight. Wow, in 9 months from obese to normal. Not bad.

I am a nurse, so I am skeptical of so many claims, but when I read about Penn Gillette losing over 100 pounds on this I had to further investigate.I ordered the book and the science behind it made so much sense. I think this book may have changed my life! Now I'm not going to lie, eating nothing but potatoes for 3 days is very monotonous, but the results are worth it. So far I have been following it for 27 days, and of those I ate potatoes 11. On the rest of the days I ate normally (within reason), and 4 of those days I even ate fairly substantially as it was a mini-vacation, and to date I have lost 10 pounds. The beauty of this diet is several reasons. For one, it is easy. Buy 10 pounds of potatoes and boil them. His book has a recipe for a gravy you can make, which I do. Eat 2-5 pounds a day, for 3-5 days (I do 3 in a row). Can't get much easier than that. Secondly, it helps control cravings. I find my desire for sugar is much lower, and the days I eat normally everything tastes so good I am pretty happy to just eat normally. Third, the days I eat potatoes only I am not starving. It may be boring, but it fills me up. Fourth, I do feel I am burning fat. I can see it in my body, and in how my clothes fit. Lastly, I think it is changing my metabolism. Every time I go off it I am nervous when I get on the scale after 4 days of eating, then am totally surprised and relieved that I don't gain it back! I am planning on losing another 10 pounds or so, then I think I can do it one day a week to maintain (maybe 2 if it is vacation, heavy night out, etc). I have struggled so hard since I hit mid 50s to lose weight, I really feel this is the diet I have been looking for. Highly recommend!!!!!!!

Saronna's GiftBy Carmen Webster Buxton

Saronna Maynard never expected to be sold into an off-world household, anymore than Duncan Trushenko expected to return from a business trip to find that his father had bought a companion for him. Saronna is grateful, in many ways. Her new protector is too horrified by the customs of Krueger’s World to wonder why her father could never find a husband for her. And off-worlders don’t believe in witches. The more time Saronna spends with Duncan, the harder it is for her to believe all men are as evil as her mother taught her. But safer or not, Saronna is still intent on keeping her secrets, because after all, she’s still on Krueger’s World.

As Duncan and Saronna learn more about each other's culture, they come to like each other more and more. But the differences in their manners, mores, and educational backgrounds make for a rocky path to deeper feelings. The story has the feel of a historical romance. Imagine if Georgette Heyer had written science fiction!

Review
"The author immediately drops us into the middle of the action of this coming-of-age/semi-first-contact story as Saronna's father is taking her to be sold to an off-world trader in the Strangers Quarter on Krueger's World. We learn that the planet is a patriarchal, backward world practicing polygamy, and that women are nothing more than chattel--better-behaved if they are beaten regularly . . "
"I loved the author's ability to seamlessly present information in a understated manner, comparing the harshness of Saronna's life as it was before, with the luxury of it now, without sounding preachy."

From the Back Cover
Saronna Maynard and Duncan Trushenko have very little in common, except for living in the same house. Saronna grew up in a walled house in a small village outside of New Jerusalem, the largest city on Krueger's World. Duncan grew up on many worlds, and has traveled the galaxy. He is dumbstruck to return from a business trip and find that his father has purchased a companion for him.

Saronna is terrified to be sold into an off-world household, but in a very short time she realizes she might be better off--and safer--in Duncan's house than in her father's. For one thing, Duncan doesn't believe in witches. Also, the more she's with Duncan, the harder it is for her to believe all men are as evil as her mother taught her. But safer or not, Saronna is still intent on keeping her secrets. After all, she's still on Krueger's World.

From Publishers Weekly
The fortunes of two sisters, Iris and Laura Roth, are chronicled in this formulaic, multifaceted saga by the author of Rich Is Better. The girls were teenagers in 1924 when their father Jacob, convicted of raping and murdering a 14-year-old millworker in Magnolia, Ga., was seized by the KKK and lynchedan obvious reference to the notorious Leo Frank case. With a small loan from the frightened Jewish community, both girls are quickly sent to New York, where, traumatized but resilient, they each resolve to address the past in different ways. Laura is determined to return to Magnolia and clear their father's name. Iris wants total escape, quick wealth and a life in high society. After an abortive film career she marries a wealthy but kinky British lord. Laura becomes an attorney and returns anonymously to Georgia with her two small children. Her future as a female Jewish lawyer in Magnolia during the Depression is bleak, so with the aid of a dedicated staff and her sister's invaluable network of social and political connections, she builds a real estate empire. Ellis's tale contains dozens of sub-plots and numerous characters up and down the social spectrum. Though predictable, the narrative will please romance fans, to whom it will hardly matter that the resolution of the murder is compromised and contrived.

From Library Journal
Basing its opening on the real-life Mary Phagan/Leo Frank murder case, this novel tells of Laura and Iris, orphaned daughters of a Southern Jew, who was lynched after being unjustly convicted of murder. Forced from their home, the girls make a new life for themselves in New York: Iris becomes the quintessential Twenties flapper while Laura marries and goes to law school, vowing to avenge her father. Though both deal with assorted disasters, Iris acquires a title and a fortune and Laura, a real estate empire; and then more troubles loom on the horizon. Though there's nothing new in plot or characters and the writing is sometimes awkward, the novel is still interesting. Recommended for popular fiction collections. Beth Ann Mills, New Rochelle P.L.,
