SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome, by Mary Beard

Review

“Beard tells this story precisely and clearly, with passion and without technical jargon…SPQR is a grim success story, but one told with wonderful flair.” - Greg Woolf, Wall Street Journal“Though she here claims that 50 years of training and study have led up to SPQR, Beard wears her learning lightly. As she takes us through the brothels, bars, and back alleys where the populus Romanus left their imprint, one senses, above all, that she is having fun.” - James Romm, New Republic“By the time Beard has finished, she has explored not only archaic, republican, and imperial Rome, but the eastern and western provinces over which it eventually won control…She moves with ease and mastery though archaeology, numismatics, and philology, as well as a mass of written documents on stone and papyrus.” - G. W. Bowersock, New York Review of Books“In SPQR, her wonderful concise history, Mary Beard unpacks the secrets of the city's success with a crisp and merciless clarity that I have not seen equaled anywhere else.” - Ferdinand Mount, New York Times Book Review“Beard does precisely what few popularizers dare to try and plenty of dons can’t pull off: She conveys the thrill of puzzling over texts and events that are bound to be ambiguous, and she complicates received wisdom in the process. Her magisterial new history of Rome, SPQR…is no exception…. The ancient Romans, Beard shows, are relevant to people many centuries later who struggle with questions of power, citizenship, empire, and identity.” - Emily Wilson, The Atlantic“A masterful new chronicle…. Beard is a sure-footed guide through arcane material that, in other hands, would grow tedious. Sifting myth from fact in dealing with the early history of the city, she enlivens―and deepens―scholarly debates by demonstrating how the Romans themselves shaped their legendary beginnings to short-term political ends…. Exemplary popular history, engaging but never dumbed down, providing both the grand sweep and the intimate details that bring the distant past vividly to life.” - The Economist

Prof Beard's SPQR is an excellent social history but not a good introduction to Roman History. She assumes that you have a reasonable grasp of the over arching political course of the empire, especially during the some 200 years of the imperial phase "covered" by this book. I say "covered" as so little is described regarding the political development of the empire. She chose to end her treatise during reign of Caracalla, but this is somewhat arbitrary as any details of his tyranny are given only in passing. She could have chosen to end her work during the reign of Alexander Severus, Commodus, or even Marcus Aurelius with no significant additions or omissions, though she does explain and justify her choice. That being said, it's clear that Prof. Beard did not set out to write a political history of Rome, but to focus on the lives of the average people that lived in the era and to tell, as best as she is able, their stories. Part of her intention in so blithely glossing over the doings of the emperors is to highlight how little effect the political realm had on the lives of ordinary people. This she does very well, despite limited written records as compared to the lives of the wealthy. Beard brings to life how ordinary people sustained themselves, what careers they may have pursued, what they may have hoped for and how they lived. I found all this to be very well told and an aspect of Rome too often glossed over in favor of the more flashy tales of intrigue that pervaded imperial roman politics. However, it needs to be said that Prof. Beard's work is a bit inconsistent in its intent and presentation. The first half dealing with the Republican era delves deeply into the political realm. She tries to highlight social aspects as best as she is able, but the poverty of primary records from that era limits what we can reasonably expect to know. Her lens focuses intently on Julius Caesar (as one would expect), the civil wars that followed, and the reign of Augustus. Tiberius and Caligula get passing mention but the remainder of the period "covered" is dominated by the social history, which again is fascinating and well presented, but the shift in focus is a bit jarring. If you are new to the study of Roman History, I would not recommend this book as its approach to the chronology is too haphazard to do anything other than confuse the neophyte. If, on the other-hand, you have a general sense of the historical narrative and are looking to flesh out your understanding and understand how Romans outside the imperial bubble lived, then you will be very well served by Prof. Beard's work.

I will admit that this wasn't an easy read for me. Although I have a deep interest in learning about the Romans, I found myself lost for the first half of the book. I started it over again after reading the first 100 pages, and this helped me some. Still, I felt that a dearth of knowledge hindered me from getting all that I could out of the book. So here's what I did get from it. First, archaeological finds don't automatically tell the whole story. There's actually quite a bit of thought that goes into telling a story the way it is thought to have happened. I do mean "thought to have happened" because there really isn't any way to know for sure, especially when looking back at something that took place over 2,000 years ago. Even when the evidence is strong, questions always remain. Secondly, the ancient world was full of brutality, uncertainty, and hardship. I'm not just talking about the murder of Julius Caesar, which was so brutal that it is still jolting to this modern reader. I'm also referring to other deaths that occurred by decapitation, crucifixion, poisoning, and one specific tale about a suicidal fellow who cut open his own stomach and pulled out his internal organs. After Rome was claimed by the emperors, there was always an uneasy alliance between the emperor and the senators. Although much of the blueprint for how emperors would rule was established by Augustus, this is one area that was still a question mark, and would remain so. While the author spends a great deal of time on the rich, she also tries to go beyond and give readers a look at the daily lives of the Roman masses. There are sections of the book that describe the jobs they performed, the housing they occupied, and how they spent their leisure hours. Unfortunately, the examples are few, simply because there isn't much recorded information available about the average Roman citizen. Thirdly, I learned that the same things that drive the world today are the things that drove the men of antiquity. The lust for power and the desire for riches hasn't changed over the millennia. Roman vices are our vices, but their virtues are ours as well. On a final note, even though this book is highly rated by critics, as a potential reader I wouldn't start with it until I had a solid background on the history of Rome, or essentially until I knew some facts. Armed with facts, this book becomes a much more enjoyable read, and readers will certainly get more out of it.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of March 2017: I recently tested my family’s patience for weeks as I announced during dinner, “I discovered something today,” and then related a new technique for learning I’d read in Learn Better. What my family didn’t realize at the time was that by teaching them what I’d learned, I myself was absorbing the lesson better than I would have if I’d just reread it again. That was only one of dozens of methods I’d consumed in Learn Better to help me understand, retain, and connect information better than through the old (and less effective) systems of highlighting and rereading. Boser’s smart and approachable writing style engaged me at once as he laid out six methods for becoming an expert at whatever you like, whether it’s basketball, parenting, or quantum physics. Experiments, data, and anecdotes back up his techniques, but almost as important, he explains learning in such a clear way that aha! moments abound. “Learning does not have a comfort zone,” he says, following up later with: “To develop a skill, we’re going to be uncomfortable, strained, often feeling a little embattled.” He emphasizes that expertise is not the most important quality of an effective educator: “We need instructors that know their subject—and know ways to explain their subject.” Boser even puts himself of the spot, suggesting that readers should question whether they believe an author’s arguments in order to bring analytical thinking to a subject, which will cement that knowledge (or their rejection of the author’s thesis) deeper in their brains. There’s a lot to absorb here, but happily you have an expert teacher guiding you now on your own path toward effective learning. --Adrian Liang, The Amazon Book Review

Review

"Learning makes us human, yet few of us truly understand how the brain, the heart, and the body work together to create new knowledge. Learn Better pulls back the curtain on the hidden ways we are wired for learning, in ways that are alternately humorous, surprising, and profound."—Walter Isaacson, President and CEO of the Aspen Institute and author of The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution"Brimming with helpful insights and interesting stories, this surprising and engaging new book provides an important, much-needed introduction to the science of learning. It belongs on the bookshelf of every learner.”—Linda Darling-Hammond, President of the Learning Policy Institute and Charles E. Ducommon Professor of Education Emeritus at Stanford University"This critically important book offers valuable—and fun to master—insights about how to learn deeply and meaningfully in a time when all the 'knowledge' in the world is just a swipe of the finger away."—Laura Moser, former education blogger at Slate"Learning is the project of a lifetime. In this humane and insightful book, Ulrich Boser reveals the tools that everyone from grade school children to their parents in the workplace can use to keep pace in a fast-changing world."—Kevin Carey, author of The End of College: Creating the Future of Learning and the University of Everywhere“This book is a great read. I enjoyed every moment of it. I enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on my own experiences in the classroom and my own experiences as a student.”—John King, Former U.S. Secretary of Education "Learn Better is at once comprehensive and delightful, filled to the brim with definitive insights on how we learn best. Boser is an engaging guide who has thoroughly sifted through the vast research on the science of learning to offer key takeaways that can be put into practice immediately. Essential reading for educators, parents, and anyone who wants to learn, once and for all, what it actually takes to 'learn better.'"—Christine Gross-Loh, bestselling author of The Path and Parenting Without Borders "Where was this book when I was struggling through undergrad, fighting off sleep as I burnt the proverbial midnight oil and laid the foundation of my current carpal tunnel condition from taking copious class notes that I now know—all these years later—were all but worthless? As Ulrich Boser reveals in an engrossing and highly entertaining way, the retention of facts, dates, and principles—learning—isn’t about what you do, but how you do it. One can’t simply vacuum up data, instead one has to “meaningfully process information.” Best of all for this old dog, anyone can master new skills by following the straightforward techniques detailed in Learn Better."—Carl Chancellor, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist

My summer discussion group for brainiac coaches is just finishing this book. On the whole, we liked it although we liked some chapters better than others. We did not come across that much new information in chapter 1 (Value), but found chapters 2 (Target), 3 (Develop), and 4 (Extend) to be better. Chapter 5 (Relate) is disturbing because it contains so many errors, that I wonder what is true in this chapter. For instance, the skateboarder problem on page 149 does not make sense. What skateboarded travels at 6.5 miles per second? At that speed, the boarder might be in the next state at the end of her run. Elsewhere Boser wondered what if Romeo and Juliet were married? Well, they were married before they died. The Venn diagram does not illustrate his point. Quiz #21 is poorly worded, so the answer given in the back of the book does not make sense. This chapter needed a good editor/fact checker. Chapter 6 (Rethink) and the Epilogue are good endings to the book. This book will be useful to teachers and coaches if they read it skeptically. Please, Ulrich Boser and Rodale Press, replace the first edition with a better written and edited version soon.

Let me say up-front I enjoyed the book and I learned a lot. However, the number of errors and low quality of writing in the book undercuts its message. Besides the errors mentioned by Mary Beth Averill in her review, there are statements like: "There’s a natural inclination to solve this problem—½ × ¼—by simply multiplying the denominators (that’s incorrect)." Um, no, that's correct; where did you go to middle school? Errors like this make me seriously question whether the author could adequately evaluate the statistics of the sources he cited to back up his statements. The writing is uneven and sometimes rambling, as you can see if you try to highlight the key points made in each chapter. With a good writer, key points are made in a single statement. This author can take a paragraph or two to make his point, which would be fine if this was a podcast, but I hold books to a higher standard. Finally, the "pop quizzes" are a good idea but devolve into questions like:What is retrieval practice?A.A game for dogs.B.A type of self-quizzing.C.A new exam format.D.A better way to play tennis.Which you can answer without even reading the book.My advice is to wait for the second edition, if there ever is one.

While I have heard some of the information before in different places this book puts together a solid framework to help reframe how should approach learning. The first step is to put aside what the habits you have learned going through K-12 education as they tend to focus more on rote learning which is not a long term benefit. Instead you should look to interact and engage with what you are learning. This is something the book drives home well.

For any teacher that questions why one lesson results in successful learning while another does not, this book can provide some answers and even a toolkit to teach better. "Learn Better" by Ulrich Boser is an interesting and entertaining review of the latest findings from the science of learning. While the book is written for a diverse audience including adult learners, educators and policy makers, as a teacher I found it provided a useful framework for evaluating and critiquing my own classroom practice. Boser organizes the book into chapters that define and illustrate each of six steps in mastering a body of knowledge that include the following: value, target, develop, extend, relate, and rethink. As I write a lesson plan, or revise an existing plan, these steps provide a kind of checklist to assess the components of the lesson or even a set of lessons in a curriculum unit. For example, I might ask myself where in the lesson is the “value” piece? We find out in "Learn Better" that value means that my students need to see the knowledge they are building for themselves as valuable. In a project-based biology curriculum this might be an early lesson where students identify a certain type of knowledge that is required to solve a real life problem such how to create a sustainable school lunch. Students might need to learn about nutrients or calories and that motivates additional lessons. Boser writes with humor and clarity as he fleshes out the importance of each step and documents the significant research studies that justify the inclusion of the step in the framework. Just as translation medicine strives to take basic biomedical research results and make products and methods useful in the clinic, in "Learn Better" Boser translates the jargon and statistical probabilities of learning science into useable tools for any learner including a classroom teacher.

First rate!! It will literally expand your brain, this writing. Who knew a book could be written about learning and how human beings best do it. Not only is this text uniquely informative, but I learned some things that are broadly applicable in amazing ways. Definitely a keeper!

Excellent book, very valuable and useful. As a professional educator I can see the concepts and methods here in use by students every semester, and this will be something that I recommend.

This book discussed not only academic research into learning, but offered practical advice to improve one's learning process. I can highly recommend this book for anyone who is a teacher, a parent, or who just wants to learn things better and faster.

This book provides a lot info about learning. It also debunks some iseas like learning styles and praising kids for being smart. I found several useful strategies to help my learning. Worth the read.

Review

"An extraordinary and complete work ... [Pimp C was] the most important and influential musician in Southern rap history." - Music journalist Matt Sonzala "A work of intense reporting and deep love by Julia Beverly, the founder and often one-woman engine behind Ozone magazine ... it's a virtual ticktock of Pimp C's life, covering his school choir days; his early years as a producer; UGK's success; his drug use; his many squabbles; his criminal history; his family life; the comeback that never quite came; and the legal troubles that dogged his estate after his death, from a combination of prescription cough syrup intoxication and sleep apnea. It also ends up being a document of the last innocent days of Houston rap, before eyes and hands were fixed on it." - The New York Times "Fascinating, well-researched biography of a brilliant, troubled, flawed, talented, compassionate individual who changed the world despite all that stood in his path ... [SWEET JONES] shattered every single assumption I would make about rappers - the book humanizes him and his family and friends, and exposes his genius and his flaws ... an incredible story - hilarious, difficult, tragic, and frustrating throughout." - Professor Andrew Cencini "One of the most entertaining and informative rap books that I've ever read ... I gained a whole new level of respect and understanding of [UGK] through the book. [It] took me into that world, into Short Texas, into Bun B's mind, into Pimp C's life ... It's almost like an action movie ... an astounding piece of work ... I only hope it gets all of the praise and exposure it deserves and inspires a spate of deeply researched books in the genre." - Music journalist Kris Ex

When I initially ordered this book I was expecting a couple of interesting insights, behind the scene stories of the legendary Pimp C, and some decent writing. Instead what I began reading was 750+ pages of truly gripping and impressive writing and research. This essentially is a giant Textbook that not only covers the events in the life of the iconic Chad Butler, but also the context behind many defining moments in Pimps life (label woes, personal/family issues, financial issue,Prolific “beefs”) and goes above and beyond in every imaginable way to offer readers an unbiased, honest, and often touching biography behind a very complex and layered individual. Julia Beverly does an IMACULATE job! Without giving too much away, expect to be surprised, touched, and educated in the history of Pimp C and his associates. My personal favorite part discusses his time and personal growth behind bars. The fact this book also has photographs of rap lyrics, family members, associates, prison letters and even tax forms from C’s life, shows that Beverly is not only capable of masterfully retelling a legends life story but also illustrates her capabilities as a researcher/reporter. Never in my life have I finished a piece of literature so massive and been left desperately wanting more. My only request is that Beverly continues her writing career as clearly she is an incredibly gifted and competent author. MUST BUY!!!!!

being from the south gives us opportunities to hear rumors that are pretty accurate, and this book proves them right... from the "master p beef to lil troy to probs with Ludacris/smoke d" Julia puts its all in this book...this book should be $50.00-100.00... I am truly proud of her, and this book explains the insanity that one must face to have a personal life, and an alter ego called an "image" chad was a nerdy, smart, cool guy that used "pimp c" to mask his fears, childhood problems....Julia explains his reasons for being who he became, and has incredible pictures to provide the imagery needed...honestly I read the book in a day and a half...it was like reading while watching the scenes play out in your mind.... pimp c will never get the artistic credit he deserved.... from his signature hi hats, to live instrumentation, singing his own vocals, playing multiple instruments, using his voice to his advantage.... the only person that I never met, that I cried when he passed on.... dude was trill and lived a hell of a life that only rick james/marvin gaye/George Clinton could only understand.... if you love pimp c/ugk or have a passion to read period, get this book asap..... long live the pimp

This book was AMAZING, far exceeded my expectations, VERY detailed, accurate, and an in depth look into Pimp C. Not just a look into his music but who Chad Butler REALLY was. The man that he became through his life experiences in and outside of the rap game. A handful of info in this book is rare and interesting. Much in fact, you cannot put it down. I have a Huge amount of Respect for Pimp C.After reading his Trill Life Story, it made me not only respect him more but Love his body of work that much more. No one will ever be able to re-create or duplicate this man. The fact that his sound, his artistry is so unique if anyone attempted to mimic his work, the whole world could see Only the Pimp. Music has not been the same since his departure but his legacy forever will live on.Buy this book today and you won't regret it!#UGK4LIFE

I breezed through all 700+ pages of this book in about a week which is a real credit to Julia Beverly but what appreciated most about this book was the honesty by which everyone was painted in this book. There were points in the book where I was like "Wow Chad could be an a-hole!" and things weren't always great between UGK but also parts where I could feel the genuine love and appreciation between Chad and his peers and his fans. There were funny moments (Stephen Jackson randomly popping up in the book to fight shirtless at the reunion concert) and sad ones (Bo-Bo lost his baby in a house fire) and touching ones (everything Mama Wes), but it really made me appreciate the drive and creative genius of one Chad "Pimp C" Butler. Rest In Peace Pimp C and thank you Julia Beverly for a wonderful book.

I am a huge UGK fan and I Loved me some Pimp C and when I saw that there was a book written about his life, I was only planning to get the book just because I am huge fan but once I started reading, I was pleased at how well it's written and how detailed it is with capturing the complex ups and downs of the determination of UGK to become the Rap phenomena's that they are today. I am sure "Chad Pimp C" Butler would be very proud of how the book depicted his life story. He was a true example of taking the talent that God blesses us with and using it. His lived the life of a determined man and unfortunately he left this world, just when he was starting to rip the fruits of his labor. I've found myself laughing, getting angry and even crying while reading this book. This is a must read book if you are a true UGK fan or a fan of Southern Rap ( Country Rap Tunes) . "UGK 4 Life!!!"

Other than a knee sock full of shwag and a pint of purp, this book is the most exhaustive resource I have ever encountered with respect to furthering one's understanding of Third Coast hip-hop. It's 750+ pages of 10 pt. font. When's the last time you read a book in 10 pt. font? Yeah, I thought so. This massive tome covers a huge variety of topics concerning Pimp C, Bun B, a ton of other artists, the music industry in general, and most importantly trashes Master P for like 30 pages.Long live Sweet Jones. UGK 4 Ever. UGK 4 Life.

I will start out by saying I'm a huge UGK/Pimp C fan. But I've learned so many things I'd never known before. This book was very well written and extremely detailed. Possibly the most well written book I've ever read. I'm very critical when reading. I hate typos & there were none in this book. I would recommend this book to anybody, but more so to a true UGK fan or a fan of southern hip hop. Currently my 13 year old son is reading it & so is my mom lol. And they both love it!
